LEETON TO WENTWORTH 17TH-24TH MARCH

17TH-24TH MARCH 2010

Jan & Gary had an errand in Griffith so we tagged along. Only about a 45min. drive from Leeton. On our return stopped off at DeBortoli Winery. At the right time too. They had a huge clearout of their wines, mostly at $24.00 a case, so you can imagine D’Arcy & Gary, like boys in a lolly shop. Although must admit Jan & I were a bit the same. It was good to get a bargain and good quality wines. Seems there is a glut on the market at the moment for wine.
Sat. morning was a busy one for them due to the fact they had a full house at the motel. Missed my morning walk, but it didn’t matter as doing the run with the breakfast trays was good exercise. Later in the morning they took us to the Yanco Agricultural High School open day in Yanco. The stalls were run by the students and the school open for inspection. Worth the visit.
Sunday morning a little quieter on the breakfast run, but then it was time for Jan & I to strip the rooms of linen etc. ready for the staff on Monday morning. As Gary has been renovating the motel rooms he still had a couple to go so D’Arcy helped with the stripping out of 2 rooms ready for complete renovations. A late afternoon lunch was prepared, cooked & served by Gary. Lovely beer battered fish & chips and tossed salad with our choice of wine, red or white. Of course this lunch went into early evening then dessert served. We had a small problem with our fridge and were waiting on a refrigeration mechanic to come and check it out on Monday. After that was sorted we decided to make our departure from Leeton on Tuesday morning. Jan & Gary thankyou for a lovely visit we really enjoyed ourselves. Looking forward to the next time we can catch up.
Tues. 23rd March and the morning temp. Have dropped quite a bit. 17deg. thismorning, but still sunshine and lovely when we said our goodbyes to Leeton. We took the scenic road to Whiton and Darlington Point where we joined up with the Sturt Highway to Hay. Road surface not very good for about 10klms of this stretch which was just under 1hr. then 118klms. to Hay. Because we shared the driving today decided to carry on to, what we thought was going to be a good overnight rest area beside a lake. (876) Lake Benanee, only 15klms east of Euston. A total distance of 366klms. As the days are longer with daylight saving we decided to have our dinner a little later after the sun went down. There were 3 other vans here also. We now realize why they go to bed early. By about 9.00pm our van was overun with insects that just came through the screens. Thousands of them. D’Arcy went outside to shut down the generator and lock up only to come back in complaining of bugs in his ears, nose, eyes and thoroughly disgusted. We just had to turn off all the lights and go to bed. Next morning was the big clean up. I used the vacuum cleaner to rid the van of them and then just empty the bag. Still took another go after they seem to be coming out of the “woodwork”. A lesson learnt, do not park up next to a not so full lake. Breeding ground for mossies. They looked like mossies, but didn’t bite.
Wed.24th After the cleanup, an online order and book a park in Broken Hill we finally were off by 11.00a.m. Fuelled up again in Euston then on to Mildura (82klms). It was hard trying to find a place to park in Mildura as we wanted to visit the Information Centre. After a few laps of a couple of blocks found one. Had a cup of coffee and picked up some info for down the track. Decided to carry on and stay in Wentworth “The Town On Two Rivers”.
